Anonymous asked: first of all, i love your tumblr, you are awesome. second of all, i adore your adoration of kitties and puppies. since you seem like a true expert in pet stuff, what is your best advice for potty training a puppy? me and my bf just adopted a 3 month old yellow lab from a shelter. so far he is a really good dog, except since he was at a shelter for a month, he is completely fine with going potty in his crate. how did you train your doggies to piddle and pooh pooh outside? thanks lady!
Thank you!
A combination of negative and positive reinforcement! Take him outside a lot and praise him when he does his business. Maybe give him a treat. You have to keep a close eye on him when you’re at home with him and scold him if he potties inside. “NO” seems to be a word dogs catch onto easily. If you scold him well after the damage has been done (like if you’re at work and he does it during the day), he will be confused and not know why you are punishing him. After a while he will make the connection that inside=bad and outside=good. It will take some time and patience but eventually he will get it! Also, use puppy pads inside the house until he learns not to go inside. Dogs are attracted to them for some reason I can’t remember right now. Good luck! Sorry if this is bad advice :( Mine still go inside the house sometimes though, which pisses me off to no end!
